A Ceiling Medallion or Ceiling Centre is the perfect option for anyone who wants to dress up an otherwise boring light fixture or room, especially one with a 9 foot ceiling!. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes to suit everyone?€™s needs. We have an assortment of medallions that match perfectly with our selection of mouldings.
As a rule of thumb, the ceiling medallion should be approximately the same size as the light fixture below. In a narrow space, such as a hallway, consider a small 15 to 20″ diameter ceiling medallion. Dining Rooms or Kitchens often suit a medium sized 25 to 28″ medallion.
Elite mouldings ceiling medallions offer an affordable alternative to high-priced plaster! They are less expensive to buy, ship, and most importantly, install easier with no special skills required. They are also easy to ship and install.
All of our ceiling medallions have 4″ diameter center hole making them adaptable to a ceiling electrical box.

Definition of Medallion
The medallions are minted in the same fashion as a United States coin, and are made of bronze and plated with 24 carat gold. In some cases they are two toned, plated with both silver and gold. They are made to commemorate the image and the year it was released. They are available exclusively with designated print editions, so they are generally limited in number.
Antique Ceiling Medallion
Materials:
- cast or molded ceiling medallion
- 1″ brush
- latex primer
- inexpensive bristle brush
- soft cotton cloth
Gold patina:
- Old World Art adhesive size
- Old World Art gold composition leaf
- Old World Art satin sealer
- base coat - Benjamin Moore’s #HC-10 satin latex paint
- patina - Benjamin Moore’s #995 flat latex paint
Copper patina:
- Old World Art adhesive size
- Old World Art copper leaf
- Old World Art satin sealer
- Base coat - Benjamin Moore’s #648 flat latex paint
- patina - Benjamin Moore’s #HC-51 Satin Latex Paint
Steps:
1. If the ceiling medallion is already installed, have an electrician remove it for easily handling and painting.
2. Whether old or new, the medallion needs to be primed. Brush on a coat of latex primer. Allow to dry for three to four hours.
3. Apply a base coat to the entire surface, and allow to dry for three to four hours.
4. Brush on a coat of adhesive size. This is the glue that will hold the leaf in place. It will appear milky when first applied, but it dries clear. Drying time is two to four hours. Note: The adhesive size tends to pool into crevices and recesses. Use a brush to pull out any excess. Once this step has been completed, wash out the brush thoroughly with warm water and soap.
5. Once the adhesive size is clear and tacky to the touch, apply the gold or copper leaf. The leaf is applied over the entire surface and pushed into the crevices with a clean dry brush.
6. Use a soft cotton cloth to rub (burnish) the leaf smooth. Avoid touching the leaf too much because the oils in your hand can tarnish the surface.
7. Brush on the satin sealer with an inexpensive bristle brush. Discard brush after using for less clean-up time. Let sealer dry overnight.
8. Apply the patina paint over the entire surface with a brush, making sure to get into all recesses. Immediately after applying this patina (before it dries) use a lightly dampened cotton cloth to remove the excess paint from the high surfaces, leaving the patina in the recesses. The more paint left on the surface, the greater the aged patina effect. The more paint is removed, the shinier and newer the metal effect. Let dry overnight.
9. Install the medallion and light fixture.
