Fabric-Covered Cornice

Product Type:

Materials:

- 1×6 pine lumber
- Box Nails
- Hammer
- Luan Plywood
- Flexible Piece of Wood
- Jigsaw
- 220-grit sandpaper
- Tack Cloth or Rag
- Quilt Batting
- Staple Gun
- Fabric

Steps:

1. Cut two side pieces to the same length and one top piece of 1×6 lumber to create a U-shaped structure. Place the top piece on top of the sides and nail them together.

2. Cut a piece of luan to fit over the frame (figure A). To draw a gentle curve along the bottom edge, lightly tap two nails into your workbench where you want the curve to start and end, and then place a flexible piece of wood between the nails. Bend it as desired; trace the line, and then use a jigsaw to cut it out. Sand the edges smooth and remove the dust with a tack cloth or damp rag. Attach the luan panel to the frame using box nails and a hammer.

3. To upholster the cornice, lay it face down on a piece of quilt batting, and then fold and staple the batting all around the cornice. Repeat the process, wrapping the cornice with the chosen fabric.
