Hardwood Medallion
By adding decorative wood inlays and painting striking patterns on your wood floors, you can make them look even more beautiful and give your home a one-of-a-kind look, creating art you can walk on.
Prepare the Floor
1. We used a screwdriver to remove the threshold at the front door, exposing an edge of the floor. We then measured the thickness of the floor and compared it to the thickness of the inlay medallion.
2. Next, we placed the inlay on the floor in the location the homeowner selected. We placed a template around the inlay, adjusted the fit and then nailed the template to the floor using brad nails.
3. Then we removed the inlay and used a nail finder to check the layout area for nails. We marked the nail locations with a pencil.
4. Using a 5/8-inch paddle bit on our drill, we drilled a pilot hole for our router.
5. Next, we used a router with a top bearing pattern cutting bit, making our first pass at a depth of 3/8-inch. We guided the router around the template making one pass all the way around.
6. We made two more passes with the router, going deeper each time. After we reached the subfloor with our router, we began pulling up the cut-out floorboards using a pry bar and hammer.
7. We removed all of the nails remaining in the sub floor and vacuumed away the dust and debris.
Attach the Inlay
1. We carefully positioned the inlay into the cutout to check the fit, then set the inlay aside.
2. We removed the template from the floor using a pry bar to lift the template and a hammer to remove the nails. Be sure to place a putty knife under the pry bar to protect the floor from any scratches or damage.
3. Next, we spread wood glue onto the subfloor and placed the inlay into the area, ressing it into the adhesive. We also filled the nails holes with wood putty.
4. Using fine-grit sandpaper, we sanded the inlay to prepare it for the finish.
5. Next, we dusted the floor with a tack cloth to remove the wood debris.
6. After sanding and cleaning the wood inlay, we applied semi-gloss polyurethane to the floor to finish and seal it.
